FACULTY PROFILE
I undertook my B.Sc.(Hons.) and Ph.D. at the National University of Ireland Galway, where I developed a keen interest in all things zoological. My undergraduate and postgraduate research focused on the biology of a number of shark and skate species that are found in the northeastern Atlantic, and I have continued to work on this fascinating group of animals since then. Prior to joining SFS, I worked at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, where I taught a number of courses including ichthyology, fisheries biology and molecular ecology. At SFS, I teach the Principles of Marine Resource Management course, and I also run a variety of Directed Research projects. When I am not in the classroom, I like to be out on/in the water pursuing my research or simply enjoying the magnificent marine environment around South Caicos.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
My primary research interest is in the biology and ecology of the elasmobranch fishes – sharks, skates and rays. The waters around South Caicos are used as a nursery by lemon sharks, so a lot of my time is spent studying this species. At present, we are trying to determine the extent and dynamics of this nursery, using a variety of techniques including tagging and genetic analysis. In addition to my work at SFS, I am also running a number of projects in the northern Indian Ocean, where I am investigating the phylogenetics and population genetics of the local elasmobranch fauna. Apart from sharks, I am also interested in turtle habitat use around South Caicos, as well as the ecology of the salinas system.
