STAFF PROFILE
Originally from the suburbs of New York City, Alyssa graduated with honors from Tufts University in 2010 with a double major in Environmental Studies and Art History and a personal interest in marine conservation and community outreach. She spent the spring of 2009 at SFS’s Center for Coastal Studies in Baja California Sur, Mexico, where she studied coastal ecosystems and discovered a way to combine her two passions – environmental advocacy and art – by conducting research on how local sea turtle murals could be used as an effective education tool for conservation groups in the community. Following her interest in experiential environmental education, Alyssa has worked with The Science Barge, a floating sustainable urban farm; Puddle Stompers Nature Exploration, leading preschoolers on hands-on outdoor exploration; and more recently she finished a teaching fellowship at The Island School in Cape Eleuthera, The Bahamas, where she co-taught the Land & Environmental Art course. Her SFS research is now featured in a permanent exhibition at The Monterey Bay Aquarium alongside prominent environmental artists. Alyssa strongly believes in the value of outdoor exploration and place-based education, and hopes that experiencing new places and cultures will continue to inspire and empower students to be forces of positive change in the global community.
