INTERN PROFILE

Claire graduated May 2011 from Dickinson College with double majors in Environmental Studies (concentration in Sustainable Development) and International Studies (concentration Latin America). While at Dickinson, she conducted field research in Venezuela on alternative soil fertility techniques, volunteered as a Spanish-English medical interpreter, taught nature education to adolescents, and worked as a TA in the Environmental Science department. Claire spent her junior year fall semester studying sustainable development in Monteverde, Costa Rica, and spring semester studying Latin American history at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, of Querétaro, Mexico.

Claire is especially interested in organic agriculture and sustainable food systems. Upon graduation she began a full-time internship at the Dickinson College Organic Farm, where she lived in a yurt off-grid, participated in diversified vegetable production and animal husbandry, supervised the greenhouses, co-managed the farm’s stand at the local farmer’s market, and explored a variety of farming techniques. She is eager to try her hand at neo-tropical agriculture at the Center!

Claire is excited to join the SFS team in Atenas, and is dedicated to the CSDS dual mission of experiential education and developing sustainable solutions for local contexts.
