STAFF PROFILE

Born and raised in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico of Cuban roots, Michael brings a unique perspective with his bilingual and bicultural background to the field of human resources management. He permanently relocated to Boston in 2006 after graduating with a B.A. from Tufts University.

As Human Resources Manager for The School for Field Studies, Michael manages worldwide personnel support and recruitment. He is responsible for SFS's strategic staffing, onboarding, retention planning, HR-related training programs, global labor law compliance, HR/Benefits administration, and employee relations. After his first year leading the SFS Human Resources function, OpportunityKnocks.org named SFS, 1 of the 15 'Best Nonprofits to Work For' in 2011.

Outside of SFS, Michael freelances as a Social Media Consultant for small businesses and is a Spanish Language and Basic Computer Skills Tutor on Wyzant.com. He volunteers as a Contributor on HumanResourcesIQ.com, as an Admissions Interviewer for Tufts University, and provides advice as an HR Mentor through the Center for Nonprofit Success.

Before coming to work at SFS, he was formerly HR Generalist at Metro Credit Union, one of the largest not-for-profit financial institutions in Massachusetts, and HR Recruiter at Bay Cove Human Services, a leading state-chartered non-profit human service provider for developmental disabilities, mental illness, aging, and drug and alcohol addiction services. He began his career in human resources as the HR Assistant at Metro US, the American subsidiary of Metro International, the world’s largest international newspaper, providing HR support and recruiting for their Boston, New York, and Philadelphia offices.

In the past he has volunteered his career coaching and job assistance services to the Career Collaborative, Chelsea Collaborative, MA One Stop Career Centers, and ROCA. He has also volunteered as a Big Brother with JBBBS and as a Kitten Foster through the MSPCA.
