Cummings Center (“The Shoe”)

The School for Field Studies (SFS) headquarters returned to its original home in the town of Beverly, Massachusetts in the winter of 2012. The new office is situated in Cummings Center, known as "the Shoe," a 2 million square foot former headquarters of the United Shoe Machinery Corporation, a North Shore landmark since 1903.  Cummings Center houses more than 500 diverse businesses and is considered one of the largest industrial plant recycling projects in the world. Pulitzer Prize winner Ada Louise Huxtable described it as "a building of outstanding utilitarian beauty" while the Wall Street Journal hailed it as "the single most important concrete landmark in this country" in 1997. Today, Cummings Center is known for its green operations, powered in part by an 800-panel, 235-kilowatt solar array, which is enough energy annually to power nearly 40 typical suburban homes. The SFS office headquarters is a hub of activity and collaboration. In our central conference room, seven clocks display the times in different time zones. Bicycles lean against office walls, covered with photos, maps and artwork from around the world, reflecting our long-standing history and our staff's values.
