Meet the Students

Dear Students, Prospective Students and Families,

These are particularly challenging times, given the world situation. It is important to us that you understand what we do to enhance the safety of our students and staff. We survey all available information from a host of resources including government agencies, international organizations, the news media and our own extensive informal network of contacts around the world. We evaluate relevant data with our center staff, who consult with their own information networks. We have an excellent system of electronic communication with all of our centers that we can access 24 hours a day. In conjunction with our field centers we have contingency plans that allow us to respond to issues and events in a timely manner. In addition, we continue to cultivate our relationship to the communities in which our field centers are located.

Going forward we are absolutely committed to the continuing education and training of our staff and students relative to safety and risk management, along with the continual monitoring of our safety support systems.

Sincerely,

Bill Frederick Safety Director

Our Safety Philosophy
Our field stations are situated in challenging natural environments near small communities in Kenya, Costa Rica, the Turks & Caicos Islands, Mexico and Australia. We recognize that the location of our sites and the nature of our research activities may present greater and qualitatively different risks than those found on a college campus within the US.

SFS is committed to managing the risks we assume in order to meet the goals of our international, field based programs. The focus of our safety strategy is threefold:

  • To create a culture of safety with our staff and students through education, training and information dissemination.

  • To continually improve our safety support systems of information gathering, communication, contingency plans, protocols, training and internal reviews.

  • To foster excellent relationships in the communities in which our centers are located.
