Garden assistant: The Center is seeking one intern with interest and knowledge of organic agriculture to lead the work in the campus farm with the groundskeeper. We have fruit trees, raised beds of herbs and medicinal plants, and shade-cloth area for vegetables. This intern will have additional program and res-life duties, but will focus on the garden for hands-on work. Academic assistant: The Center is seeking two additional interns who will work directly with a professor as a teaching/research assistant, in addition to providing general programatic assistance. Job Summary: SFS Interns provide academic project assistance, group dynamic facilitation, community outreach project leadership, center project leadership, and logistical support for the day to day operation of the center. Location: SFS Center for Sustainable Development Studies, Atenas Costa Rica Reports to: Center Director. Day to day supervision may be delegated to Student Affairs Manager, Faculty, or Site Manager as appropriate. Duration: Internships are one year in duration. Qualifications: B.A./B.S. in field related to environmental studies and the specific research focus at the Center Current First Aid and CPR certifications Experience organizing and facilitating groups Clean driving record and ability to operate standard transmission vehicles mandatory Conversational fluency in Spanish (Interns will use Spanish every day in their job) High motivation and demonstrated ability to work as a team member and independently Demonstrated commitment to environmental issues Willingness to work flexible hours and live on site at the field station with a team of permanent faculty and staff and groups of U.S. undergraduate students Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of an SFS or similar international residential program Lifeguard certification Computer literacy with MS Word and Excel and statistical software In-country or regional experience Advanced medical certifications (WFA, WFR, etc.) Interests in alternative agriculture and gardening Interest in and/or experience interacting with rural communities on the implementation of community-based projects.
Job Description: Academics: Coordinate with professors for field labs and field experiments to organize equipment and supplies. Assist professors with class preparation, materials, and projection equipment. Support the professors and staff during the implementation of the Directed Research projects. This includes training in necessary field skills and preparing students for the research methods. Help organize students in the field, oversee data collection, maintain equipment, data analysis and teaching as indicated by faculty members.
Community Outreach: Collaborate with the implementation of community outreach projects helping to link student groups with the community of Atenas. Investigate cultural, social and religious activities in town and in other parts of Costa Rica, and inform students of events. Coordinate and develop workshops, seminars, and other activities with the community. Center Project: lead student groups on-site in a center project (i.e., recycling, composting, gardening, carbon footprint).
Group Dynamics: Support faculty and SAM in organizing students during field activities. Understand SFS policies and model positive interaction Support SAM in facilitating positive group dynamics and in addressing behavior problems among students if they develop.
Logistical Support: Participate in morning staff meetings for logistical coordination for the day, group dynamic check-in, and project status reporting. Perform tasks essential to the day-to-day functioning of the program and center as assigned by the Center Director, Site Manager, SAM and faculty. Help in the proper maintenance and repair of equipment and medical kits. Help the Site Manager with errands in town, which provides opportunity to use your Spanish skills and get to know the businesses and community residents. Understand and follow the policies of the Center and the SOD duties. Carry out any other tasks as required by the CD in order to facilitate and expedite the center operations and program delivery.
