His research interests include wildlife conservation and ecology, human–wildlife interactions, the role of traditional institutions and roles in resource conservation, spatial wildlife distributions and influence of land uses on this distribution, and application of both Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Biostatistical techniques in natural resource research. Okello joined SFS in July 1999 as a resident faculty at SFS Center for Wildlife Management Studies in Kenya. In July of 2006, SFS promoted him to Professor of Wildlife Management at the Kenyan center. Students appreciate his engaging teaching style, his depth of knowledge, his approachability, and especially his empowering sense of humor. As a member of the resource management faculty at KBC, he taught mainly wildlife management and conservation, and topics in biometry. In July of 2009, Dr. Okello was promoted to center director and is the only SFS faculty member to rise through the ranks from resident lecturer to full professor to center director.
