  • Established in 1980, we are the nation's oldest and largest study abroad program for college undergraduates.
  • SFS has five permanent professional field research stations in Australia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Kenya and the Turks & Caicos Islands.
  • More than 90% of SFS faculty are host country nationals and have their PhD degrees.
  • Students engage in hands-on learning, acquiring transferable field research and leadership skills.
  • Semester students complete a Directed Research project closely mentored by SFS faculty.
  • SFS five year research plans are driven by the local community based on their needs.
  • SFS students participate in a real, applied research, presenting data to local community stakeholders at the end of their program.
  • SFS is a leader among study abroad organizations with our safety program, employing a full-time Safety Director and Student Affairs Managers, and a Safety Advisory Committee, who monitor safety throughout the program.
  • Our full-time Alumni Relations Coordinator supports SFS students upon their return and maintains long-term contact with over 13,000 alumni.
  • Financial aid is also available for summer and semester programs.
  • SFS is a non-profit organization accredited by Boston University.
