Erin L. Bergstrom Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship has been established by the friends and family of Erin L. Bergstrom, a 2004 graduate of The University of San Diego and a Spring 2003 participant at The School for Field Studies Center for Rainforest Studies in Queensland, Australia. Erin died suddenly in September 2005 while pursuing a graduate degree program in environmental science at the University of Hawaii with fellow 2003 SFS alumnus Brian Gold. Erin's description of her SFS experience was published in the Summer 2003 edition of the SFS Newsletter “Field Notes” as follows:
“To sum up my experience in the School for Field Studies Australia program I usually use the words amazing, eye-opening, and truly once in a lifetime. To have the ability to learn about a concept, such as the different forest types surrounding us on our property, and then to actually be able to walk through the property and visually see the forest types we had learned about was very valuable to our education.” – Erin Bergstrom, University of San Diego Australia, Spring 2003
The scholarship shall be awarded by The School for Field Studies (SFS) to financially deserving students of The University of San Diego who attend one of The School for Field Studies environmental study abroad programs. Preference will be given to students who both have a commitment to preservation of the environment and have demonstrated leadership skills at the University or in their communities. Scholarship recipients shall be nominated by Dr. Michel Boudrias, Associate Professor, Marine Science and Environmental Studies Program at The University of San Diego, in consultation with the SFS Director of Admissions. Award amounts vary and are based on the estimated financial need of the recipient.

Elliott Thomsen, a biology major who is entering his junior year at The University of San Diego, was the summer 2006 recipient of the Erin L. Bergstrom Memorial Scholarship. Thanks to the many friends and family members who gave so generously to this scholarship fund honoring Erin's memory, Elliott was able to attend Summer Session I at the SFS Center for Wildlife Management Studies in Kenya. Elliott has been a leader both on and off campus where he is involved in KIPP All Stars (a program for underserved middle school students) and the USD Alcala Club, a service organization of men and women who work with the president of the University of San Diego as official representatives of the university. Elliott has shown his commitment to the environment through participation in several field experiences including a brachiopod study at the University of Washington Labs and the Cady Mountain Garry Oak Restoration Project. He has also participated in a service trip to Honduras where he spent the month of January working in an orphanage in Tegucigalpa.
