| Program Content SFS semester and summer programs offer high-quality interdisciplinary academics at the undergraduate-level, accredited by Boston University. While the majority of our students are college undergraduates, motivated high school students may also participate in our summer programs. We also offer a new graduate-level public health and environment field practicum in Kenya for graduate and qualified undergraduates in public health, nursing, pre-med, and the medical and health sciences.
SFS classrooms include coral reefs, rainforests, African savannas, and the Himalayas; the focus of our research ranges from sea turtle conservation to rainforest restoration.
Programs are designed to teach students about critical, local environmental problems and train them to do field research that will help address these problems. Our faculty provide core lectures needed to understand the content areas pertinent to case study and research questions. Field exercises compliment classroom lectures and help students to develop skills needed for Directed Research projects. The academic and research agenda at each center is driven by a Five Year Research Plan, established by SFS staff and local community leaders.
Semester Program Structure Semester programs run for approximately 95 days, including a five-day midterm break (an opportunity to travel on your own). We compress a 16-week semester into 14 weeks, so be prepared for a very intensive but rewarding learning experience. Each program offers four courses of four credits each (in ecology, natural resource management, socio-economics, and policy content areas) including the Directed Research course. Our Costa Rica, Mexico, and Kenya programs each offer two additional credits for formal language instruction in Spanish for the former two and Swahili for the latter. Summer Program Structure Country programs are composed of one session that is offered twice per summer and runs for approximately 30 days.
- Programs in Costa Rica, Mexico, and the Turks and Caicos Islands offer two identical sessions that run back-to-back.
- Students interested in our Australia summer program may enroll in one or both sessions. Program content and location between the two are distinctly different: Session I takes place in both New Zealand and Australia, while Session II operates in Australia only.
Our new Eastern Himalayan Forests and Rural Livelihoods program in Bhutan will operate on a six-week schedule during the summer with exact dates to be determined.
Students interested in our Community Wildlife Management program may take this course in either Kenya (Session I) or Tanzania (Session II).
Each session offers one course, which carries four college-level semester credits in Environmental Studies. Click Below For More Information Australia Bhutan Costa Rica Kenya Mexico Tanzania Turks and Caicos Islands New Zealand
