This scholarship has been established by the family of Stephen F. Lee who developed a passion for the marine environment first as a student in the 1986 SFS summer course on Dolphin Biology and Behavior in the Gulf of Mexico, and later as an intern in the summers of 1987 and 1988 for the Social Ecology of Spinner Dolphins program in Kauai, Hawaii, and as an assistant faculty member in the spring of 1989 at the SFS Center for Marine Mammal Studies located at that time on the main island of Hawaii. In reflecting on his initial decision to enroll in an SFS program, Stephen said, “My goal has been to become a cetacean biologist but I realized this goal was based on a fantasy image, not reality. I didn't know what working in the field was like or how cetacean research was conducted. I decided the only way to learn was to experience them.”
Steve was a 1988 graduate of Tufts University, a Peace Corps forestry volunteer in Paraguay, and was enrolled in the masters of environmental management program at Duke University at the time of his death from leukemia in 1992.
The Stephen F. Lee Memorial Scholarship is awarded to financially deserving students attending an SFS summer or semester program. Preference is given to students who attend an SFS marine focused program.
