The School for Field Studies Center for Sustainable Development Studies

Follow Tammy Newcomer in Costa Rica this Semester with BlogAbroad.com January 19, 2006
The School for Field Studies (SFS) is excited to introduce Tammy Newcomer as she embarks on her semester abroad in Atenas, Costa Rica with SFS and recounts her adventures on BlogAbroad.com. Click here to read her blog.
Tammy was chosen from a pool of hundreds of soon-to-be study abroad students to reflect weekly to an audience of thousands on her field expeditions, intercultural experience, interactions with the Costa Rican community and all of the unexpected adventures and emotions that come with studying abroad. Tammy's enthusiasm and positive attitude were evident to the SFS admissions team from the get-go, and it's no surprise to us that she was chosen as one of only four bloggers on BlogAbroad.com this season.
Tammy has high goals for her semester abroad at the SFS Center for Sustainable Development Studies. As an environmental studies major at the University of Maryland- Baltimore County, she hopes to walk away from this semester with improved Spanish, a better understanding and deeper exploration of a new culture and most importantly, having learned about the environment. She was attracted to SFS programs because of the exposure gained to diverse ecosystems as well as the small group setting catering to students as individuals. A creative problem solver and environmentalist, Tammy has pulled together 120 volunteers on Earth Day to plant 300 saplings on her university's campus and considers sustainability to be the most pressing environmental issue of our time. The close-knit community in Atenas should be a perfect fit for Tammy, who has rowed on her university's crew team for the past two years, developing trust, loyalty and a sense of responsibility with people who are now her closest college friends.
Visit BlogAbroad.com weekly to read all about Tammy's experiences working in the field on real-world environmental issues and gaining hands-on field research skills in Costa Rica with SFS. She will also be posting pictures and responding to bloggers' questions regularly.
