 | The British-governed Turks & Caicos Islands lie at the southern end of the Bahamas chain, 100 miles north of the Dominican Republic. Seagrass beds, mangrove stands, sandy shoals and deep reefs lend a patchwork appearance to miles of shallow blue waters surrounding the Islands. Our field station on South Caicos Island is based just steps away from the ocean. Nearby Cockburn Harbor has several restaurants and stores, and a bank.
Facilities include:
- Group housing/bathrooms for up to 33 people (4/room)
- Limited freshwater supply; bathing in ocean (with biodegradable soap) encouraged
- No laundry services are available on the island
- Three meals per day are provided
- Computer room: 6 PCs with Windows OS, Microsoft Office software, Internet access. Bringing own laptop encouraged.
- Field library with information on the local environment, ecology, resource management and policy. Approximately 500 books; 2000 articles.
- Basic sampling and measuring equipment including balances, 1 Olympus dissecting microscope and 1 HP microscope
- Dive compressor and 32 SCUBA tanks
- Five dive support boats (19, 21, 23 and 24-foot Carolina skiffs, 1 V-hull, 21 ft)
- Transportation can be arranged to/from airport and local beaches/research sites
- Center Director can assist researchers with obtaining collecting permits through the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (given advance notice)

Access to Our Field Station:
The TCI are served by a few major airlines through the international airport in Providenciales, the largest island in the Turks and Caicos. From Providenciales, transportation to our Center on South Caicos Island can be arranged through charter flights that fly daily between the islands.
